We all want those sweet pictures with our little babes… but if you’re already laughing at the idea of them smiling and posing for a 30-minute session, you’re not alone! The best part? No photographer (especially not me!) expects your kids to stand perfectly still, smile on command, and nail every pose. Honestly, we’d be shocked if they did!
That said, there are a few things that can make your session smoother and more fun for everyone. Here are five “R’s” I always recommend to help set your family up for a great experience:

1. Reveal
Let your kids know ahead of time that you’re doing family pictures, don’t spring it on them the day of! Frame it positively:
“Guess what?! A photographer is going to take pictures of us having so much fun together!”
Hype it up like it’s the most exciting thing ever. Let them know who I am, “You’ll get to meet McKenzie!” You can even show them a picture of me so I feel familiar and not like a stranger when we meet.

2. Reconcile
Let’s be honest: family photo outfits aren’t always your kids’ top picks. Princess dresses, race car tees, and favorite well-loved shoes might need to stay home. But here’s the trick: give them choices.
Pick two outfit options that match your vision, and let them choose between them. Do the same for shoes. When they make their pick, hype them up! “You did such a great job picking your outfit, you look amazing!”

3. Remember
It’s picture day! Remind your kids what’s happening:
“Today’s the day! We’re taking family pictures!”
Walk them through what to expect, what they’re wearing, how you’re doing their hair, and when things will start.
For littles under two, wait to put on their outfit until you arrive (because, well… accidents happen). Don’t forget extra snacks, before and after. Somehow, photo sessions always lead to hungry kiddos.
And most of all: remember this is supposed to be fun.

4. Relax
You’re getting everyone ready, managing outfits, packing snacks, and probably rolling your eyes at me saying “relax.” I get it.
But truthfully, if you’re stressed, your kids will pick up on it. Give yourself more time than you think you need.. it always takes longer. Play your family’s favorite music on the drive, and once you arrive, take a breath. I promise, it’s okay to just enjoy the moment.

5. Release
Here’s my biggest advice when you arrive: let go of expectations.
If your three-year-old wants to run? Run with them.
If your daughter won’t let you put her down? Snuggle her.
If no one’s smiling? Tickle them, play with them, let them be.
If they ignore my prompts.. I promise, it doesn’t hurt my feelings one bit.
The most beautiful, genuine photos happen when kids are just being themselves. Your only job? Lean in and go with the flow.
As a mom of two and a photographer, I share all this from a place of real life experience. I’ve had sessions that felt like sunshine and some that felt like chaos, and guess what? The galleries always tell a story full of love that shines through.
When you show up to a session with me, know this: I’ll guide the chaos, chase the little feet, and capture the love and laughter of your family — just as you are.
