Flat lays are so in right now when it comes to wedding photography.. and do we love it? YES. Yes, we do! When I was getting married (forever ago, or at least it feels like it), the focus was mainly on the rings, the dress, and the bouquet. Those were the showstoppers. But now? Flat lays tell a deeper story. They capture the quiet, beautiful details that make your day uniquely you. And honestly, I’m obsessed. If you’re not sure what a flat lay is, think of it as a styled, overhead photo of your wedding day essentials, like your invitation suite, jewelry, perfume, vow books, heirlooms, and more. It’s ] intentional and oh-so-pretty. It’s like the Pinterest board of your wedding, all in one photo.
What You Need to Do on Your Wedding Day (or the Night Before) for Flat Lays:
If you want these gorgeous shots, a little prep goes a long way. Here’s what you can do:
1. Gather the Goods in One Place- Put all your details in a box or bag so they’re ready to go when your photographer arrives. This avoids the last-minute scramble. Include things like:
- Your full invitation suite (invite, RSVP card, envelope, etc.)
- Both sets of rings (yes, both—your band and your partner’s)
- Jewelry (earrings, necklace, hairpins)
- Perfume bottle
- Vow books
- Shoes (especially if they’re cute)
- Veil or any lace details
- Any family heirlooms or special trinkets
- A few florals (ask your florist for loose blooms or greenery)
- Your garter, cufflinks, tie, watch—anything sentimental or beautiful!
2. Assign a Point Person- Designate someone (a bridesmaid, planner, or family member) to hand these items off to me! You’ll be busy soaking up your morning, and this makes sure nothing gets missed.
3. Talk to Me in Advance- Let them know flat lays are important to you. They’ll need time (and a good window with natural light!) to style them beautifully, so build it into your timeline.
4. Keep Everything Clean & Crease-Free- Pack your paper goods flat (maybe between books or a folder) to keep them crisp. If you have wax seals, ribbons, or any extras from your invitation designer, bring those too!
5. Personal Touches Are Everything– This is where your story shines—bring that handkerchief from your grandmother, your partner’s love note, or your favorite lipstick. It’s the little things that turn a pretty photo into a meaningful memory.
Flat lays aren’t just pretty—they’re emotional. They capture the care, the love, and the little things you chose with intention. So yes, they are absolutely worth the hype.
